Why South Carolina?

WORLD CLASS CONDITIONS. That is why. It is only once you have traveled around the world freediving that you truly begin to understand just how special of a place Lake Jocassee is to freedive in.

For example. Where I completed my Instructor Program out in Koh Tao, Thailand. We would take our boat about 10 to 15 minutes out into the Gulf of Thailand. To have about 30-33 meters (98-108) or so to work with. And if conditions were PERFECT. And I mean like once every couple months or so perfect. Then we could take our boat an additional 10 minutes to about 40 meters (131 feet). Not to mention. When you are diving in the ocean. You always have to be monitoring the tidal movements, wind speed and direction, and different layers of current. Just to name a few. That’s a lot of variables. A lot of gas. And a decent, but not incredible amount of depth.

Consider the other world famous cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Even the deepest cenotes out there are around 70 meters (229 feet). With the majority of them being around 30 meters (99 feet) or so. And the waters can be quite cold. Even in the summer months.

Or take for example Dahab, Egypt. The Mecca of freediving. Now it is the Mecca for a reason. Beautiful crystal clear waters and the world famous “Blue Hole” there, is exactly as the name suggests - a hole. It’s a sinkhole in the Red Sea. So there are no currents to factor into dive time considerations. Which is great. But even still. The deepest depth you will get at the Blue Hole is just over 90 meters . And there is only room for one buoy there. It can get quite cold. And the dive season out there is somewhat short out there because of this.

Where as in Lake Jocassee, South Carolina. In the Land of the Free and the home of the Brave U.S.A. We simply have to walk into the tranquil lake to have access to any depths we could we dream of. No daily tides to limit our dive windows. No strong ocean winds or swells. No layered currents. Simply the calm immense body of blue.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Lake Jocassee is one of the greatest places to learn how to freedive in. And insanely enough. At the same time. It is one of the most phenomenal places to progress to world class levels of the sport, as well. Should you so choose.
